Una fortezza medievale situata lungo il fiume Adige, costruita per volere di Cangrande II della Scala tra il 1354 e il 1356.
La sua principale funzione era quella di proteggere il signore e la sua famiglia da eventuali attacchi esterni o rivolte dei cittadini.
Offriva infatti una sicura via d’uscita dalla città attraverso un ponte fortificato che avrebbe permesso, in caso di necessità, di dirigersi verso il Tirolo.
All ’interno della struttura si trovava una piccola chiesa, denominata San Martino in Acquaro, da cui il complesso inizialmente prese il nome.
Oggi lo conosciamo come Castelvecchio poiché, in seguito alla costruzione dei castelli di San Pietro e San Felice, si ritenne necessario distinguere da essi la costruzione più antica.
Il castello si articola in due parti principali: a ovest si incontra il palazzo residenziale, la Reggia, mentre a est si apre la vasta piazza d’armi, racchiusa da possenti mura merlate e custodita da sette torri.
Tra queste domina il Mastio, che svetta fiero per ben 42 metri d'altezza.
Proprio il caratteristico coronamento a coda di rondine (i merli ghibellini) svela l'anima politica dei suoi fondatori: nella storica lotta tra Papato e Impero, gli Scaligeri scelsero convintamente di sostenere la parte imperiale.
Sotto la Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia, il castello venne utilizzato prima come caserma, poi come polveriera.
Ad oggi, questo imponente e affascinante monumento ospita un museo in cui sono esposte opere d’arte di inestimabile valore.
In epoca scaligera, si estendeva la piazza d’armi, dove risiedevano i signori della città, sorge oggi il Circolo Unificato dell’Esercito, un vero e proprio gioiello incastonato nel cuore della città.
Attraversare Castelvecchio sarà molto più di una corsa: per tutti i runner della 42K e della 21K sarà un'emozione pura, scolpita nella pietra e nel cuore.

A medieval fortress located along the Adige River, built at the behest of Cangrande II della Scala between 1354 and 1356.
Its main function was to protect the lord and his family from external attacks or citizen uprisings.
In fact, it offered a safe escape route from the city via a fortified bridge that would allow them, if necessary, to head towards the Tyrol.
Inside the structure stood a small church named San Martino in Acquaro, from which the complex initially took its name.
Today we know it as Castelvecchio because, following the construction of the castles of San Pietro and San Felice, it was deemed necessary to distinguish the older building from them.
The castle is divided into two main sections: to the west lies the residential palace, the Reggia, while to the east opens the vast parade ground, enclosed by mighty crenellated walls and guarded by seven towers.
Among them, the Mastio, dominates, soaring proudly to a height of 42 meters.
The characteristic swallow-tail crenellation (Ghibelline merlons) reveals the political soul of its founders: in the historic struggle between the Papacy and the Empire, the Scaligers firmly chose to support the imperial faction.
Under the Most Serene Republic of Venice, the castle was used first as a barracks, then as a gunpowder store.
Today, this imposing and fascinating monument houses a museum displaying priceless works of art.
Where the parade ground once extended in the Scaliger era, and where the lords of the city resided, today stands the Army Unified Club (Circolo Unificato dell'Esercito), a true jewel set in the heart of the city.
Running through Castelvecchio will be much more than just a race: for all 42K and 21K runners, it will be pure emotion, carved in stone and in the heart.
