(ITA) Uno dei luoghi di culto più affascinanti di Verona

Situata nei pressi di Ponte Navi, la Chiesa di San Fermo Maggiore fu edificata tra l’XI e il XII secolo dai monaci Benedettini sul luogo del martirio dei Santi Fermo e Rustico, per custodirne le reliquie.

Il complesso ha la particolarità di essere formato da due chiese sovrapposte: quella inferiore, realizzata in stile romanico, e quella superiore, in stile gotico.

La chiesa superiore fu ristrutturata dai Francescani nel XIV secolo e vanta un monumentale soffitto in legno a carena di nave rovesciata, sul quale si possono distinguere ben 400 busti di Santi dipinti.

Al suo interno possiamo ancora ammirare straordinari capolavori dell’arte gotica, come il Mausoleo Brenzoni, dove Pisanello dipinse la sua celebre Annunciazione.

Nella Chiesa inferiore, edificata dai monaci Benedettini in epoca medievale, ci si trova in un suggestivo spazio a quattro navate che conserva affreschi realizzati tra l’XI e il XIII secolo.

Entrando qui si percepisce inevitabilmente una piacevole atmosfera di raccoglimento e spiritualità. 

La facciata a capanna rappresenta un’armonica fusione tra i due stili:

La fascia inferiore, in pietra di epoca romanica, presenta lesene che terminano in archetti, affiancate da finestre ogivali aggiunte successivamente dai Francescani per armonizzarla con la parte superiore.

La fascia superiore, edificata in tufo e mattoni, mostra chiari richiami all’architettura francese, come le alte guglie, piuttosto insolite nel panorama italiano.

Sul portale bronzeo, realizzato nel Novecento dallo scultore Luciano Minguzzi, sono raffigurate le vicende dei Santi Fermo e Rustico.

(ENG) One of Verona's most fascinating places of worship.

Located near Ponte Navi, the Church of San Fermo Maggiore was built between the 11th and 12th centuries by Benedictine monks on the site of the martyrdom of Saints Fermo and Rustico, to house their relics.

The complex has the unique feature of consisting of two overlapping churches: the lower one, built in the Romanesque style, and the upper one, in the Gothic style.

The upper church was remodeled by the Franciscans in the 14th century and features a monumental wooden ceiling shaped like an inverted ship's hull, adorned with 400 painted busts of Saints.

Inside, we can still admire extraordinary masterpieces of Gothic art, such as the Brenzoni Mausoleum, where Pisanello painted his famous Annunciation.

In the lower church, built by the Benedictine monks in the Middle Ages, visitors find themselves in an evocative four-nave space that preserves frescoes created between the 11th and 13th centuries. Entering here, one inevitably feels a pleasant atmosphere of reflection and spirituality.

The gabled facade represents a harmonious fusion of the two styles:

The lower section, in Romanesque-era stone, features pilaster strips ending in small arches, flanked by ogival windows later added by the Franciscans to harmonize it with the upper section. The upper section, built in tufa and brick, displays clear echoes of French architecture, such as the tall spires, which are quite unusual in the Italian landscape.

The bronze portal, created in the 20th century by the sculptor Luciano Minguzzi, depicts the story of Saints Fermo and Rustico.
